Yasha Heifetz table lamps
Each lamp is constructed around a slim, vertical brass stem rising from a tripod base composed of three flat, rectangular brass legs. The legs extend outward from a central joint, creating a stable and visually lightweight foundation. The straightforward construction emphasizes the relationship between the vertical stem and the horizontal arrangement of the base, resulting in a balanced and architectural silhouette. The brass surfaces retain a warm golden tone with natural variations in color and patina, reflecting the age and character of the material.
The lamps are fitted with their original wide, slightly tapered drum-shaped shades, which have been newly recovered in a light natural linen fabric. The shades feature gently sloping sides and a broad lower opening, complementing the slender proportions of the brass stands. Their soft textile surfaces contrast with the metallic structure and diffuse the light to create a warm, atmospheric illumination. A circular internal diffuser and the original shade supports contribute to the lamps’ characteristic construction, while the exposed brass fittings and small black switches provide subtle functional details.
Yasha Heifetz was a designer whose lighting designs are associated with the mid-century modern movement and its emphasis on functional simplicity, refined proportions and carefully considered materials. His work is characterized by clean geometric forms and restrained decorative elements, allowing the structure and materials to define the overall appearance. The B-31 model reflects these principles through its minimal brass framework and generously proportioned shade.
Bergboms, established in Malmö, Sweden, became an important manufacturer of modern lighting during the mid-20th century. The company is recognized for its production of refined table lamps, floor lamps and other lighting fixtures, often incorporating brass, metal and textile elements. Its designs reflect the Scandinavian tradition of combining functional construction with elegant proportions and high-quality materials. The B-31 table lamp is a distinctive example of this approach, balancing a lightweight architectural base with a broad, softly illuminated shade.
Both lamps retain their original brass structures and lampshades, with the latter newly recovered in linen fabric. The brass stems are stamped with the model designation “B-31” and the manufacturer’s name “BERGBOM”. The lamps have been rewired with twisted fabric-covered electrical cords, preserving their vintage character while updating the wiring.
The pair is in good vintage condition, with minor signs of use and a well-developed patina consistent with age. The brass surfaces display natural oxidation, small scratches and subtle tonal variations, particularly around the bases and fittings. The newly recovered linen shades present a clean, softly textured appearance, complementing the original metalwork. Together, the lamps retain a cohesive and authentic mid-century character.
