Yngve Ekström cabinet
This rare cabinet, model Bangkok, was designed by Yngve Ekström and produced by Westbergs Möbler in Sweden during the 1950s. It is a distinctive example of mid-century Scandinavian cabinetry, demonstrating Ekström’s design ethos which emphasized both visual refinement and functional sophistication.
The cabinet is constructed primarily in teak, with selected details in beech, rosewood, and brass. The front features a pair of doors with an intricately patterned geometric relief made up of repeated lozenge and diamond shapes that intersect subtly across the vertical grain of the teak veneer. The pattern is composed of carved outlines that enhance the natural figure of the wood and create a dynamic surface without relying on ornament. This decorative motif is restrained but rich in visual texture, typical of Ekström’s nuanced approach to surface articulation.
The cabinet opens to reveal a highly functional and versatile interior layout. It is divided into open compartments of various sizes, some with adjustable shelving, and includes a set of sculptural, curved-edge interior drawers, suitable for organizing smaller items. The interior wood presents a warm, lighter tone that contrasts softly with the deeper hue of the exterior. The structure is elevated on square-section legs with gentle tapering and a lower stretcher, contributing to an overall impression of balance and vertical elegance.
Yngve Ekström (1913–1988) was one of the leading figures in postwar Swedish furniture design and is best known internationally for his iconic Lamino chair. His work is characterized by its clarity of form, ergonomic intelligence, and skilled material use. This cabinet showcases his mastery in joining architectural form with craft detail.
The piece is in good vintage condition, with visible signs of wear and patina appropriate to its age. There are some marks and small surface imperfections on the finish and interior, but the cabinet retains its structural integrity and original components, including hinges and lock hardware.
