Information

This rare small coffee or side table was designed by Yngve Ekström and produced by Westbergs Möbler in Tranås, Sweden during the 1950s. The table is crafted entirely from solid teak, embodying the restrained elegance and material sensibility characteristic of Scandinavian modernism. The tabletop features an organic triangular shape with softly curved edges and rounded corners, highlighting the designer’s attention to natural form. The surface displays rich teak grain, with fine variations in tone and pattern, and includes exposed joinery details such as circular wooden plugs that reveal the hand-finished construction techniques.

The table is supported by three slightly tapered legs, which are turned with precision. These legs are connected by a minimalist stretcher structure, contributing to both the table’s stability and its graphic appearance. The leg profiles are slender, tapering gently towards the floor, which enhances the overall lightness of the design. Over time, the teak has developed a warm patina that adds depth and character to the table’s surface, further enhancing its visual appeal.

Yngve Ekström (1913–1988) was a prominent Swedish modernist designer and co-founder of Swedese, a furniture company known for its focus on both function and form. While Ekström is most famous for his Lamino chair, his broader body of work includes a range of finely crafted furniture pieces with sculptural qualities and precise detailing. This coffee table, produced by Westbergs Möbler, reflects his ability to bridge traditional craftsmanship with the emerging language of mid-century modern design.

The table measures 79 cm in width, 35.5 cm in depth, and 40.5 cm in height (31.1 x 14 x 15.9 inches). It is in very good vintage condition, showing minor surface wear consistent with age and use, including light scuffs and a gentle softening of some edges. Despite these signs of use, the structure remains stable, and the finish has been well preserved, making it a fine example of Scandinavian craftsmanship from the period.
