Yngve Ekström dining table

This is a rectangular dining table and desk designed by Yngve Ekström and produced by Swedese in Sweden during the 1960s. It is crafted from solid pine, showcasing the warm golden-brown tones and distinctive grain patterns typical of the species. The design is both minimal and architectural, featuring a broad tabletop with softly rounded corners and edges, supported by sturdy vertical slab legs connected with a horizontal stretcher. The legs are shaped with a characteristic arch cut-out at the base, adding lightness and a subtle decorative element to the otherwise clean geometry.

Brass fittings are used in the joinery, visible as small round fasteners on the leg surfaces, complementing the pine’s hue. The craftsmanship is evident in the precise alignment of the grain, particularly along the tabletop, and in the finely finished edges. The proportions of 159.5 cm in length, 80.5 cm in width, and 69 cm in height give it versatility for use as either a dining table or a generous writing desk.

Yngve Ekström (1913–1988), co-founder of Swedese, was a central figure in postwar Swedish modernism. He is best known for combining functional clarity with a warm, human touch in his designs, often working in natural materials. Swedese, founded in 1945, became a hallmark of Scandinavian design quality, and this table reflects the brand’s mid-century aesthetic—simple, enduring, and deeply connected to natural materials. The piece remains in very good condition, with only light signs of age and use, consistent with careful preservation over decades.
