Yrjö Kukkapuro easy chairs
A rare pair of model 418 easy chairs designed by Yrjö Kukkapuro and produced by Haimi in Finland during the 1960s. These sculptural lounge chairs exemplify Kukkapuro’s experimental approach to ergonomics and material innovation, which helped define Finnish modernism in the postwar era.
Each chair features a boldly contoured seat shell in glossy black fiberglass, resting on a distinctive five-point swivel base that gives the piece its instantly recognizable, futuristic character. The combination of black leather and brown fabric upholstery enhances the design’s tactile depth while softening the stark modern lines of the fiberglass body.
True to Kukkapuro’s philosophy of “functional beauty,” the chairs are engineered to support the body naturally, with deep, curved seats and enveloping armrests that merge comfort and sculptural precision. The organic form and industrial materials reflect a moment in design history where craftsmanship met technological optimism, embodying both sophistication and playfulness.
In good vintage condition with visible patina and signs of age consistent with use.
