Rolf Graae wall lamps

This rare set of decorative wall lamps was designed by Danish architect and designer Rolf Graae and produced by Tema in Denmark during the 1950s. The design is characterized by its geometric structure and sculptural presence, aligning with Graae’s architectural sensibility and attention to formal rhythm.

Each lamp is composed of three interlocking hexagonal brass plates, creating a bold and symmetrical foundation. The brass surfaces are polished, contributing to a reflective and luminous quality that enhances the ambient light when the lamps are in use. The hexagonal configuration provides a distinct modular structure, evoking a sense of architectural precision and ornamented minimalism.

At the center of each hexagonal plate, a vertically oriented E14 socket is positioned, resulting in a total of three light sources per fixture. This configuration not only emphasizes balance and repetition but also distributes light in multiple directions, adding dimensionality and softness to the surrounding space. The exposed sockets are a nod to mid-century design’s blend of functional honesty and decorative simplicity.

Rolf Graae, primarily known for his work in ecclesiastical architecture and organ design, brought a refined architectural discipline to his furniture and lighting objects. His pieces often reflect a concern for proportion, materiality, and clarity of composition. These wall lamps exemplify his lesser-known but distinctive contributions to Danish modern lighting design.

The lamps were manufactured by Tema, a Danish producer known in the mid-20th century for creating bespoke and small-series lighting with a focus on metalwork and craftsmanship.

Each lamp measures 31.5 cm in width, 9.5 cm in depth, and 30.5 cm in height. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 12.4 inches wide, 3.7 inches deep, and 12 inches high.
