Ib Kofod-Larsen sofa
This rare three-seat sofa, model 423, was designed in 1954 by Danish architect and designer Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced the same year by the Danish cabinetmaker Christensen & Larsen. Constructed with Kofod-Larsen’s characteristically refined proportions and flowing lines, the sofa presents an elegant, compact form with softly curved armrests and subtly angled legs that reflect his emphasis on organic modernism.
The piece retains its original upholstery in a two-tone wool fabric, with red and anthracite grey arranged in a balanced composition across the seat and backrest. The combination of bold color and minimalist geometry highlights Kofod-Larsen’s attention to visual rhythm and spatial clarity. The sofa’s internal frame is constructed of solid wood, likely beech or oak, and sits on tapered legs with a lightly splayed stance that lends both stability and sculptural lightness.
This particular model was exhibited at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition at Designmuseum Danmark in 1954, a prestigious annual showcase for Denmark’s most accomplished designers and cabinetmakers. Pieces presented at these exhibitions were often produced in limited numbers and featured advanced techniques and innovative forms. Model 423 exemplifies this ethos through its careful craftsmanship, experimental silhouette, and upholstery scheme.
Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921–2003) was a central figure in the Danish Modern movement. Trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, he worked closely with several prominent cabinetmakers, including Faarup Møbelfabrik and Christensen & Larsen. His furniture is noted for its clean lines, ergonomic comfort, and subtle detailing, often incorporating rich woods and high-quality textiles. Kofod-Larsen’s designs were exported widely and remain influential in Scandinavian and international design history.
Christensen & Larsen, known for producing custom and exhibition-level furniture during the mid-20th century, collaborated with many of Denmark’s leading designers. Their work is distinguished by a high level of material integrity and artisanal construction, typically produced in limited quantities.
The sofa is in very good vintage condition, showing minor wear consistent with age while retaining its original upholstery. Its dimensions are 127 cm in length, 73 cm in depth, 69.5 cm in height, and 38 cm in seat height, which correspond to approximately 50 inches by 28.7 inches by 27.4 inches with a seat height of 15 inches.
