Tove & Edvard Kindt-Larsen sofa
This sofa, model Prisma, was designed in 1963 by the Danish architect duo Tove and Edvard Kindt-Larsen and produced by Ludvig Pontoppidan in Denmark. It exemplifies the geometric formalism and material restraint characteristic of early 1960s Scandinavian modernism, reflecting the designers’ architectural approach to furniture design.
The sofa is defined by its angular, faceted profile—a clear expression of sharp geometry and volumetric clarity. The backrest and armrests taper outward at acute angles, forming a continuous, low-profile enclosure that creates the distinctive prism-like silhouette. The body is upholstered in vibrant teal Kvadrat Hallingdal wool, a durable textile originally developed by Nanna Ditzel in 1965 and widely used in Scandinavian furniture. The upholstery has been recently renewed and is in excellent condition, featuring crisp seams and a tight fit.
Supporting the sofa is a solid teak base finished in a warm amber tone with fine vertical grain. The squared, straight legs are connected by two cylindrical stretchers that provide structural stability. Precision woodworking is evident in the rounded joinery details, especially where vertical and horizontal elements meet with exposed dowel connections, highlighting the handcrafted quality of the frame. The seat appears to float within the wooden support due to the recessed positioning of the sofa body above the frame, lending the piece a visual lightness.
Tove and Edvard Kindt-Larsen were key figures in mid-20th century Danish design, known for blending rigorous modernism with refined material detailing. Their work was often produced in limited numbers and emphasized functional clarity and fine craftsmanship. Ludvig Pontoppidan, the manufacturer, was a respected cabinetmaker who collaborated with leading Danish architects and was known for high-quality, limited-production furniture.
The Prisma sofa is extremely rare and stands as one of the most geometrically distinctive examples from the Danish modern period, illustrating a convergence of sculptural form, material honesty, and modernist principles.
The dimensions are 175 cm wide, 70 cm deep, and 80 cm high, with a seat height of 39 cm, approximately 68.9 inches wide, 27.6 inches deep, 31.5 inches high, and a seat height of 15.4 inches.
