Tove Kindt-Larsen
Tove Kindt-Larsen (1906–1994) was a Danish architect and furniture designer whose work helped shape the development of Danish modernism. Working closely with her husband and collaborator Edvard Kindt-Larsen, she created furniture and interiors defined by elegant proportions, natural materials, and a strong sense of comfort and usability.
Biography
Kindt-Larsen studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, graduating as an architect. Together with Edvard Kindt-Larsen she established a design studio that became known for its holistic approach to interiors, where furniture, textiles, and spatial composition formed cohesive environments.
Her work is characterised by a balance between modernist simplicity and organic warmth. Designs often incorporate natural materials such as teak, oak, cane, and rattan, introducing texture and lightness while maintaining structural clarity. Seating furniture in particular demonstrates a refined understanding of ergonomics, combining sculptural restraint with inviting comfort.
Among the studio’s most recognised designs are lounge chairs and seating produced by manufacturers such as France & Daverkosen (later France & Søn). These pieces exemplify the Kindt-Larsens’ ability to unite craftsmanship traditions with the evolving language of Scandinavian modern design.
Through her collaborative practice and architectural sensibility, Tove Kindt-Larsen contributed significantly to the humane and material-driven character that defines Danish modernism.
