Information

This sculptural stool was designed by Danish architect and furniture designer Astor Glibstrup and produced by Frederikssund Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1950s. It represents early postwar Scandinavian modernism, where industrial materials and organic forms were skillfully combined in utilitarian furniture. The design is notable for its simplicity, ergonomic shaping, and the contrast between natural wood and industrial steel.

The stool features a three-legged frame supporting a round-edged triangular seat made of solid teak. The seat is deeply sculpted with a shallow saddle-shaped contour that dips centrally and rises subtly at the sides to accommodate the user’s posture. The teak exhibits a rich reddish-brown tone with visible grain patterns and has developed a warm, tactile patina over time. Softly chamfered edges emphasize the seat’s organic curves and invite comfort.

The tubular steel legs are mounted directly into the underside of the seat. They are slightly splayed to enhance stability and end in black rubber feet that provide grip and protect flooring. The steel shows a light industrial patina and signs of wear consistent with the piece’s age, contributing to its character while remaining structurally sound.

Astor Glibstrup was active during a period of innovation in Danish design, exploring ergonomics and industrial production techniques. This stool reflects early influences from plywood seating design but is executed here in solid teak, offering a more artisanal quality. Frederikssund Møbelfabrik was a smaller Danish manufacturer known for producing finely crafted wooden furniture during the postwar era, though their work is relatively rare today.

The stool is in good vintage condition, with minimal wear on the teak seat and typical surface marks on the steel legs. All original components, including mounting hardware and feet, appear intact.

The dimensions are 39.5 cm wide, 25.5 cm deep, and 48.5 cm high, with a seat height of 45 cm. In imperial measurements, this corresponds to approximately 15.6 inches wide, 10 inches deep, 19.1 inches high, and a seat height of 17.7 inches.
