Steen Østergaard chairs

This is a rare set of eight stackable dining or outdoor chairs, model A-Line 290, designed by Steen Østergaard and produced by CADO in Denmark in 1966. These chairs embody the radical innovation and sculptural aesthetic that characterized Scandinavian plastic furniture design in the mid-20th century.

The chairs are made from a single piece of molded fiberglass-reinforced polyamide in a deep, dark green tone. This material was cutting-edge at the time and allowed for seamless, flowing contours without joints or fasteners. The organic shape reflects an ergonomic and futuristic vision of furniture, with a continuous curving frame that integrates seat, backrest, and base into a unified form.

The silhouette is fluid and dynamic, with an open, cantilevered construction that provides both flexibility and support. The front legs loop downward and then rearward into an open elliptical base, creating a striking visual rhythm and structural balance. The seat itself gently slopes toward the back, and the backrest features a soft convex curvature for lumbar support.

Steen Østergaard was a Danish designer known for his work with molded plastics and his pursuit of functional yet avant-garde forms. The A-Line 290 was one of the earliest monobloc chairs made using injection molding technology, and its design remains a landmark in the development of stackable seating. Produced by CADO, a manufacturer linked to some of the most iconic Danish furniture designs, the model highlights the era’s optimism and technological experimentation.

These chairs are in good vintage condition with signs of use, including light surface scuffs consistent with their age and material. The plastic retains its deep color and sheen, and all chairs remain structurally sound.

Each chair measures 52.5 cm in width, 48 cm in depth, and 75.5 cm in height, with a seat height of 43 cm. These dimensions convert to approximately 20.7 inches wide, 18.9 inches deep, 29.7 inches high, with a seat height of 16.9 inches.
