Arne Tidemand-Ruud Lounge chair
This rare lounge chair, model Holmenkollen, was designed by Norwegian designer Arne Tidemand Ruud and produced by Norcraft in Norway during the 1960s. It is an example of Scandinavian mid-century design, combining organic form, high-quality materials, and functional comfort. The chair’s frame is crafted from solid teak with a warm, reddish-brown hue and a finely grained surface. The sculptural base is defined by its low, elongated stance and elegant, flowing lines that transition seamlessly into the arm and backrest supports.
The seat is formed from a continuous sling of thick, black leather, supported by the teak frame and attached with brass fittings. The leather has a smooth surface with visible natural creases and patina, showing minor signs of age and use consistent with careful vintage preservation. Contrasting stitching in a warm brown tone follows the contours of the leather panels, accentuating the seat’s curvature. The chair features adjustable seating positions, a hallmark of Ruud’s functional approach, allowing the sitter to adapt posture for relaxation.
Arne Tidemand Ruud’s work reflects the Norwegian interpretation of mid-century modernism, with a focus on craftsmanship, organic forms, and natural materials. Norcraft, the producing company, was known for its high-quality furniture that balanced modernist aesthetics with traditional Scandinavian woodworking techniques. The Holmenkollen model, named after Oslo’s famous ski jump, captures a sense of dynamic movement and leisure in its form.
This piece measures 70 cm in width, 100 cm in depth, and 72 cm in height, with a seat height of 30 cm (27.6 x 39.4 x 28.3 inches, SH 11.8 inches). Its combination of teak, leather, and brass, along with its distinctive profile, makes it a collectible example of 1960s Norwegian design.
