Yngve Ekström coffee table
This rare coffee or side table was designed by Yngve Ekström and produced by Westbergs in Tranås, Sweden during the 1950s. Ekström, who is perhaps best known as the co-founder of Swedese and for his iconic Lamino chair, was a leading figure in Scandinavian modern design. His work is characterized by refined proportions, functional elegance, and a strong sense of materiality, all of which are present in this piece.
The table features a rosewood top with a rich, dark grain that adds depth and warmth. Its organic, triangular form with softly rounded edges reflects the Scandinavian mid-century emphasis on biomorphic and nature-inspired shapes. The surface is accented by small circular inlays, lending a subtle decorative element to the otherwise minimalist design. Supporting the top are three slender, black lacquered wooden legs, which taper gracefully and end in subtly widened feet, giving the piece both visual lightness and stability.
The construction demonstrates Ekström’s ability to combine sculptural form with practicality. The use of rosewood, a prized material in Scandinavian furniture of the period, underlines the table’s exclusivity and high quality, while the black lacquered legs provide a striking contrast to the warm, reddish-brown tones of the top.
The table remains in good vintage condition, with only small signs of usage consistent with age, which contribute to its authenticity and historical value. It stands as a fine example of Scandinavian mid-century modernism, merging craftsmanship with a timeless aesthetic.
