Hans Wegner sideboard

This rare sideboard, model RY-25 also known as “President” was designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Ry Møbler in Denmark in 1959. The piece represents a defining example of Danish modern design, combining Wegner’s characteristic sense of proportion and function with refined craftsmanship and material precision. The sideboard is executed in richly figured rosewood with a pronounced linear grain pattern across the sliding doors, creating a rhythmic visual structure that emphasizes the natural beauty of the material.

The body rests on four chromed steel legs with rosewood feet, a contrast that gives the cabinet a sense of lightness while maintaining visual balance. The interior is constructed in oak and fitted with adjustable shelves and drawers, offering practical storage with fine detailing. The hardware is minimal and geometrically precise, underscoring Wegner’s focus on clarity of form and utility. A paper label from AB Nordiska Kompaniet, Stockholm, and a dated marking “1959” attest to the authenticity and early production of this model.

Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007) is recognized as one of the leading figures of the Danish modern movement, known for his extensive body of furniture that blends sculptural form with functional logic. Wegner’s collaboration with Ry Møbler during the 1950s and 1960s resulted in several of his most architecturally resolved storage designs, where craftsmanship and industrial refinement coexist in perfect equilibrium.

This example has been carefully restored and remains in good vintage condition with minor signs of age. The rosewood retains a deep, warm tone with a finely polished surface that highlights the natural grain. The metal elements show subtle patina consistent with age. The sideboard exemplifies Scandinavian mid-century ideals of simplicity, material honesty, and enduring quality.
