Poul Kjærholm dining table
This rare dining table, model PK-54, was designed by Poul Kjærholm and produced by E. Kold Christensen in Denmark in 1963. The table exemplifies Kjærholm’s philosophy of uniting industrial precision with natural materials, combining a flint-rolled Cipollini marble top with a brushed steel frame and an optional six-piece addition ring of solid maple.
The table’s circular marble top displays complex veining in grey and white tones, emphasizing the natural pattern of the stone while contrasting with the cool, geometric base in stainless steel. The minimalist steel structure is constructed with Kjærholm’s characteristic attention to proportion and joinery, achieving both visual lightness and structural clarity. The removable maple extension ring softens the expression of the stone and metal, allowing the table to expand in diameter while introducing a warm, organic element. When not in use, the extension leaves are stored in a custom curved wooden cradle, reflecting Kjærholm’s functional artistry and devotion to material logic.
Poul Kjærholm (1929–1980) was one of Denmark’s most influential post-war furniture designers. Trained as a cabinetmaker and educated at the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, he developed a unique design language that emphasized steel as a noble material, treating it with the same respect traditionally reserved for wood. His collaboration with E. Kold Christensen resulted in some of the most refined examples of Danish modernism, including the PK-22 chair, PK-80 daybed, and this PK-54 table, considered one of his masterpieces for its serene balance of mass, line, and texture.
This example remains in good vintage condition, showing gentle signs of use and a fine, even patina across the materials. The marble surface displays subtle wear consistent with age, and the maple ring retains its natural tone with minor traces of handling.
