Yngve Ekström coffee table
This rare coffee table was designed by Yngve Ekström and produced by Westbergs Möbler in Tranås, Sweden during the 1950s. The table is crafted in solid and veneered teak, showcasing the designer’s signature approach to functional elegance. Its top features a softly curved, boat-shaped form with raised edges that are subtly sculpted at the ends, providing both a visual accent and practical detail to prevent items from sliding off. Beneath the main surface, an integrated lower shelf offers additional storage and display space, supported by three slender legs that taper gracefully toward the floor.
The piece has been completely restored, preserving the rich warm tone of the teak while bringing back the clarity of its grain and original finish. The surface and structure remain in good vintage condition, with light signs of age that reflect its history without compromising its functionality. The combination of its sculptural profile, practical shelving, and refined proportions make this a versatile and characterful centerpiece.
Yngve Ekström (1913–1988) was one of Sweden’s most important designers of the mid-20th century, best known as the co-founder of Swedese and for his iconic Lamino chair. His designs are characterized by their clean lines, respect for natural materials, and careful attention to human use. This coffee table reflects his dedication to creating furniture that was both aesthetically modern and suited to everyday life.
This table is a fine example of Scandinavian modern design, combining understated ornamentation, natural materials, and practical usability. Its form is light yet substantial, making it ideal for living spaces where mid-century craftsmanship and a warm material presence are valued.
