Ib Kofod-Larsen bureau
This rare bureau or chest of drawers, designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen and produced by Fredericia Møbelfabrik in Denmark, is a refined example of mid-century Danish cabinetmaking. Executed in rosewood, the piece exemplifies Kofod-Larsen’s mastery in combining sculptural detailing with functional clarity, and his sensitivity to material expression.
The bureau features a rectangular body constructed from richly figured rosewood, displaying a spectrum of deep reddish-brown tones with distinctive, dark, linear grain patterns. The rosewood surfaces retain a natural luster, and the finish has developed a warm, subtle sheen over time, enhancing the depth and texture of the wood.
The structure is elevated on slim, slightly tapered legs that give the piece a light and elevated stance. The legs are well-integrated with the frame, maintaining visual continuity while contributing to the overall proportion and balance. The front of the chest comprises a series of drawers, each fitted with recessed, sculpturally carved handles that are seamlessly integrated into the drawer fronts. These handles are both tactile and visually minimal, reflecting the Danish modernist commitment to elegance through reduction.
The overall design emphasizes horizontal lines and visual simplicity, allowing the material quality and craftsmanship to take prominence. Measuring 90 cm in width, 45 cm in depth, and 109 cm in height (35.4 x 17.7 x 42.9 inches), the piece is well-suited for use as a storage cabinet or bedroom bureau, offering ample drawer space within a compact vertical form.
Condition is very good, with the rosewood veneer in excellent preservation. Minor signs of age are limited to faint wear on high-contact areas, with no structural issues or notable blemishes. The drawers function smoothly, and all joints remain tight.
Ib Kofod-Larsen was a central figure in the Danish modern movement, recognized for his sophisticated use of materials and an aesthetic that balanced organic warmth with precise construction. His work for Fredericia Møbelfabrik represents a high point in Danish furniture production of the 1950s and 1960s. This bureau is a rare and exemplary piece, combining architectural simplicity with luxurious materials and subtle craftsmanship.
