Axel Einar Hjorth chairs
Very rare pair of side chairs model Lovö designed by Axel Einar Hjorth. Produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden. This is a very rare pair of side chairs, model Lovö, designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden in 1932.
These chairs exemplify Hjorth’s distinctive fusion of modernist simplicity with traditional craftsmanship, characteristic of his designs for NK’s furniture series during the early 1930s. The construction features acid-stained and oiled pine, a material choice that emphasizes both the natural texture of the wood and the rustic yet refined aesthetic of the pieces. The design is further distinguished by wrought iron fittings, which serve as structural reinforcements while also adding a decorative, industrial contrast. The chairs have a bold and sculptural presence, with slightly curved backrests that are attached to the frame with visible iron fasteners. The rectangular seat and straight legs maintain a geometric clarity, reinforcing the functionalist approach of Hjorth’s work. The wood shows a deep patina, highlighting the material’s natural grain and lending an aged character to the pieces.
Axel Einar Hjorth was a leading Swedish designer whose work bridged the gap between luxury Art Deco and the emerging Scandinavian modern movement. His Lovö series, named after the Swedish island, was part of a collection of furniture designed for leisure homes, intended to be both practical and elegant. This series has since gained recognition for its historical importance and rarity. The chairs remain in good original condition, showing wear consistent with age and use.
The dimensions are 47.5 cm in width, 49 cm in depth, and 95 cm in height (18.7 inches x 19.3 inches x 37.4 inches), with a seat height of 40 cm (15.7 inches).
