Information

This rare and exquisite set of Borgholm chairs—comprising two armchairs and four side chairs—was designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Bodafors in Sweden during the 1930s. The set is a definitive example of Swedish Grace, a style that emerged between classicism and modernism, characterized by its balance of architectural clarity, ornamentation, and superior craftsmanship.

Crafted from richly toned walnut, the chairs exhibit sculptural precision and restrained elegance. The warm wood frames are marked by refined detailing, including sculpted armrests on the armchairs, softly rounded edges, and finely carved geometric cross-stretchers that add both structural strength and decorative refinement. The symmetry and proportions of each element reflect Hjorth’s architectural design sensibility and his ability to merge functionality with visual poise.

The walnut has developed a graceful natural patina over time, enriching the chairs with depth, subtle variation in tone, and historical character. The grain of the wood is clearly visible and contributes to the tactile and visual richness of the overall design.

The chairs have been reupholstered in a luxurious crème-colored velvet fabric that provides a contemporary contrast to the darker wood while respecting the formality and elegance of the original design. The reupholstery is neatly tailored, maintaining the clean lines and silhouette of the seats and backs. The combination of new textile and aged wood offers a compelling interplay between preservation and modern update.

The side chairs measure 50 cm in width, 46 cm in depth, 89 cm in height, with a seat height of 45 cm (approximately 19.7 x 18.1 x 35 inches, seat height 17.7 inches).
The armchairs measure 59 cm in width, 60 cm in depth, 92 cm in height, with the same seat height of 45 cm (approximately 23.2 x 23.6 x 36.2 inches, seat height 17.7 inches).

Axel Einar Hjorth, one of Sweden’s most influential designers of the early 20th century, was known for bridging neoclassical traditions with the emerging modernist ideals. As head of Nordiska Kompaniet’s design studio and later in his own collaborations, including with Bodafors, Hjorth produced furniture that continues to define Swedish design heritage.

This Borgholm set represents a harmonious fusion of sculptural presence, handcrafted detail, and functional elegance—ideal for a formal dining setting or as accent pieces within a sophisticated interior.
