Alvar Aalto floor lamp
This rare floor lamp is the first production model A805, commonly referred to as the “Angel Wing” lamp, designed by Alvar Aalto in 1954. It was produced by Valaistustyö in Finland and originally created for the National Pensions Institute in Helsinki. The lamp is constructed from brass and painted metal, with a base wrapped in stitched black leather, combining refined craftsmanship with modernist material contrasts.
The defining feature of this lamp is its asymmetrical shade, composed of stacked, wave-like metal elements. These overlapping layers soften and diffuse the light, creating a characteristic warm glow while minimizing glare. The sculptural, wing-like form of the shade gave the lamp its nickname, as it resembles an angel’s wing in flight. This organic yet architectural approach exemplifies Aalto’s ability to merge natural inspiration with functional design.
Alvar Aalto, one of the most significant figures of 20th-century modernism, was known for his humanistic approach to architecture and design. His lighting designs often paralleled his architectural philosophy, balancing functionality, atmosphere, and form. The A805 “Angel Wing” lamp is regarded as one of his most iconic lighting pieces, embodying Scandinavian modern ideals of simplicity and sculptural beauty.
The lamp remains in good vintage condition, showing signs of age, patina on the brass, and wear consistent with its period of production. These elements contribute to its authenticity and character, underscoring its historical and collectible value.
