Bruno Mathsson dining table

The rare Maria flap dining table, designed by Bruno Mathsson and produced by Karl Mathsson in Värnamo, Sweden, in 1968, is an outstanding example of Scandinavian modern design emphasizing functionality, craftsmanship, and elegant simplicity. This table ingeniously combines high-quality materials with innovative construction to offer remarkable versatility.

Constructed primarily from walnut, beech, and brass, the tabletop highlights the natural grain and warm tones of walnut, providing an inviting, organic surface. The supporting frame and legs are crafted from beech wood, lending structural stability while preserving a light and airy feel. Brass hinges and fittings are seamlessly integrated, allowing the folding mechanism to operate smoothly and reliably.

The defining feature of the Maria table is its expandable design, enabling it to transform from a compact, console-like form just 23 cm (9 inches) wide to a full dining table measuring 280 cm (110.2 inches) in width. This remarkable range makes it ideal for space-conscious interiors without sacrificing capacity or comfort. The depth remains consistent at 90 cm (35.4 inches), and the height is 71.5 cm (28.1 inches), suitable for standard dining seating.

Bruno Mathsson (1907–1988) was a seminal Swedish furniture designer known for pioneering ergonomic bentwood designs and functionalist principles. His work balanced aesthetic clarity with practical innovation, often pushing the boundaries of woodworking techniques to enhance user comfort and experience.

Karl Mathsson’s workshop in Värnamo was responsible for the meticulous production of Bruno Mathsson’s designs. Their close collaboration ensured the realization of some of the most iconic pieces in 20th-century Scandinavian furniture.
