Ib Kofod-Larsen Elizabeth sofa
The U56 “Elizabeth” sofa, designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen in 1958, is an iconic example of Danish mid-century modern design. Produced by Christensen & Larsen in Denmark, this model was notably showcased at The Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition at Designmuseum Danmark in 1958, underscoring its significance in Scandinavian design history.
The sofa’s frame is crafted from rosewood, a prized material celebrated for its deep color variations and intricate grain patterns. The design is distinguished by sculptural armrests and subtly tapered legs, reflecting Kofod-Larsen’s characteristic blend of organic forms with precise craftsmanship. The seat and backrest are newly reupholstered in burgundy leather, carefully following the original design to preserve the sofa’s authenticity while enhancing durability. The rich leather complements the warmth and texture of the rosewood frame, creating a harmonious balance of materials.
Ib Kofod-Larsen was a Danish architect and furniture designer renowned for integrating functionalism with refined craftsmanship. His work frequently showcased high-quality materials and meticulous detailing, which contributed to his status as a highly collectible designer. The “Elizabeth” series gained its name after Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip acquired a pair of chairs from this line during a visit to Denmark, lending the series a royal association.
Christensen & Larsen, the Danish manufacturer behind this sofa, was known for its collaborations with leading designers, producing furniture that upheld exceptional standards of craftsmanship. Their precise joinery and use of premium materials are evident in this piece’s construction and finish.
The sofa epitomizes Scandinavian modernism through its balanced combination of form and function, organic shapes, and natural materials. It measures 144 cm in width, 74 cm in depth, and 71 cm in height (56.7 x 29.1 x 28 inches), with a seat height of 38 cm (15 inches), making it a distinguished and elegant piece of mid-century Danish design.
