Paavo Tynell table lamp
The table lamp model 9227, designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Idman in Finland during the 1950s, is a distinguished example of Scandinavian mid-century lighting. It reflects Tynell’s characteristically refined approach, balancing utilitarian function with sculptural clarity and meticulous attention to material detailing.
Constructed from a combination of white lacquered metal and brass, the lamp features a conical shade perforated near the lower edge with elongated horizontal slots. These perforations serve both an aesthetic and functional role, providing visual lightness while also acting as a heat vent. The shade is supported by a vertical brass rod that connects to a circular steel base, also finished in white lacquer. The base is weighted for stability and exhibits visible signs of age, including patination, minor paint loss, and surface wear—consistent with authentic use over time.
The lamp is fitted with an adjustable brass joint, allowing the shade to pivot and direct light with precision. This joint includes a small engraved brass locking mechanism marked with the Idman name, attesting to the lamp’s provenance and manufacture. The proportions of the lamp are carefully considered: the broad base anchors the vertical brass stem, which rises to meet the sharply angled shade, creating a poised and elegant silhouette that remains visually balanced despite its asymmetry.
Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was one of Finland’s most influential lighting designers. A trained metalworker, he co-founded Taito Oy in 1918 and went on to design extensively for both Taito and Idman. His work is renowned for its poetic use of brass, perforated metal, and light geometry—often blurring the boundary between industrial product and decorative object. Tynell’s designs from this period typify Finnish modernism’s emphasis on craftsmanship, material intelligence, and refined form.
Idman Oy was a leading Finnish lighting manufacturer in the postwar decades, producing a broad range of luminaires for public and private interiors. Tynell’s designs played a central role in establishing the firm’s design identity and reputation, particularly through models like the 9227, which combine modular functionality with visual elegance.
The dimensions of the lamp are 23 cm in width, 30 cm in depth, and 46 cm in height (approximately 9.1 x 11.8 x 18.1 inches). It remains in good vintage condition, with natural patina to the brass, wear to the lacquered surfaces, and minor marks consistent with age.
