Paavo Tynell table lamp
This table lamp, model number 5321, known as the “Shell” lamp, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Taito Oy in Finland during the 1940s. Paavo Tynell is celebrated as one of Finland’s most influential lighting designers, renowned for his ability to combine functional modernism with poetic form. Taito Oy was his principal manufacturer during the early part of his career and was instrumental in realizing many of his most iconic lighting objects.
The lamp is constructed in brass with a cane-wrapped stem, and features a striking shell-shaped shade that is finely fluted in a radiating pattern. The form of the shade recalls marine and botanical inspirations, characteristic of Tynell’s softening of industrial materials through naturalistic motifs. The ridged brass surface captures and reflects light with a warm luster, while the asymmetrical form of the shade provides both practical downlight and a sculptural profile.
The stem is tightly wrapped in natural cane, a hallmark Tynell detail that introduces organic texture and a tactile contrast to the metal surfaces. This treatment also emphasizes the verticality and slenderness of the lamp’s proportions. The base is a simple, flat, circular disk in brass, visually grounding the composition while maintaining the overall clarity and elegance of the design.
The brass retains a golden patina consistent with age, and the lamp is in excellent condition with original components. It functions both as a source of intimate desk or table lighting and as a sculptural object, illustrating the dual utility and decorative appeal found in Tynell’s best work.
This piece represents Finnish mid-century lighting design at its most refined, fusing craftsmanship, material honesty, and a lyrical approach to form. Its understated elegance and distinct silhouette have made it one of Tynell’s most recognizable and sought-after table lamp models.
The lamp measures 27.5 cm in height and 33 cm in width, equivalent to approximately 10.8 inches tall and 13 inches wide.
