Axel Einar Hjorth dining chairs
This rare set of eight dining chairs, model Lovö, was designed by Axel Einar Hjorth and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden in 1932.
The chairs are constructed from acid-stained and oiled pine, a material choice that reflects Hjorth’s signature use of rustic yet refined craftsmanship. The wood displays a rich, natural grain with a warm patina that has developed over time. The structure is reinforced with visible wrought iron fittings, which add both functional stability and an industrial contrast to the organic material. The design is characterized by its minimalist yet robust aesthetic, with a slightly curved backrest and solid, angled legs. The backrest is attached with large, exposed fasteners that emphasize the construction technique. The seat cushions retain their original upholstery, featuring a woven fabric in earthy tones with a geometric pattern. This textile adds a layer of texture and color to the otherwise simple and utilitarian form.
Axel Einar Hjorth was a leading figure in Swedish design during the early 20th century, known for bridging the gap between high-end furniture production and functional rustic designs. The Lovö series was part of his work for Nordiska Kompaniet, a prestigious Swedish department store and furniture manufacturer. Hjorth’s designs from this period were heavily influenced by the modernist movement, while also incorporating traditional Scandinavian craftsmanship. The Lovö series, in particular, was designed for use in Swedish summer houses, combining practicality with an appreciation for raw materials. The chairs remain in very good condition, with the original upholstery well preserved. The wood surfaces show minor signs of age, contributing to the authenticity and character of the set.
