Torbjørn Afdal attrib. bar cabinet
This rare bar cabinet, attributed to Norwegian designer Torbjørn Afdal and produced by Mellemstrands Møbelfabrik in Norway during the 1960s, showcases a refined and well-balanced form. The cabinet features slender tapering legs and two front doors veneered in vertically grained rosewood. The left compartment opens to reveal a curved, rotating bar section with glass shelves and a mirrored back, while the right compartment contains a pull-out tray and a fitted bottle rack. Both doors are lockable, each with its own key for added functionality.
The cabinet is constructed from veneered rosewood with solid rosewood legs and framing. The rosewood has a deep, reddish-brown hue, with striking natural grain patterns that add warmth and visual interest to the piece. The design combines sculptural elegance with functional innovation, two key characteristics of Afdal’s work and the broader Scandinavian mid-century movement.
The piece is in good original condition, showing only light signs of age-related wear, consistent with its vintage status.
The dimensions of the cabinet are 126 cm in width, 42 cm in depth, and 100 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 49.6 inches wide, 16.5 inches deep, and 39.4 inches high.
