Arne Vodder armchair
This rare armchair, model 51 A, was designed by Arne Vodder and produced by Sibast Møbelfabrik in Denmark in 1951. It exemplifies Danish mid-century modern design through its organic form, honest use of materials, and meticulous craftsmanship.
The frame is constructed from a combination of solid oak and teak. The teak is used for the sculpted armrests, featuring a darker tone and fine, tight grain. These armrests taper gracefully toward the handrest, with a soft curvature that enhances both comfort and visual elegance. The legs are slender and tapering, connected by an exposed stretcher that reinforces the structure while contributing to the chair’s overall lightness.
The seat and gently curved backrest are handwoven in cane using an intricate over-under pattern, creating a geometric basket-weave texture. The golden honey color of the cane adds warmth and contrasts beautifully with the deeper teak and lighter oak tones. This woven surface provides breathability and comfort, suitable for extended seating while maintaining a sculptural clarity.
The chair is in excellent vintage condition, with tight, evenly patinated cane and wood surfaces showing only minimal wear consistent with careful use. The joinery is precise, reflecting the high craftsmanship typical of Sibast’s workshop in this era.
Arne Vodder, trained under Finn Juhl, is known for his elegantly asymmetrical, functional designs marked by subtle detailing and organic influence. His collaboration with Sibast produced many iconic pieces, with model 51 A standing out as a refined example of his focus on understated elegance and human-centered design.
Sibast Møbelfabrik, established in the early 20th century, played a significant role in the international success of Danish modern furniture, fostering close collaborations with designers like Vodder to ensure innovation paired with superior construction and materials.
The chair measures 67 cm in width, 62 cm in depth, and 78 cm in height, with a seat height of 41 cm. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 26.4 inches wide, 24.4 inches deep, 30.7 inches high, and a seat height of 16.1 inches.
