Information

This very rare cabinet was designed by Swedish architect and designer Eyvind Beckman and produced by Hjalmar Jackson in Sweden in 1944. The piece exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian craftsmanship, rooted strongly in the Swedish Grace tradition, blending geometric clarity with intricate artisanal detail.

Constructed from richly toned mahogany, the cabinet’s front surface features meticulously matched parquetry veneer arranged in a repeating chevron or herringbone pattern. This decorative skin, created by precision-cut veneer segments laid symmetrically, showcases the material richness and geometric balance characteristic of Beckman’s design language.

The cabinet rests on a raised, slender mahogany base supported by four square legs connected with shaped stretchers, lending visual lightness and architectural grounding. This elevated stance was a signature of 1940s Scandinavian design, allowing furniture to appear airy and unburdened within interior spaces.

Inside, the two front doors open to reveal multiple horizontal shelves made from solid and veneered oak, complemented by three shallow drawers and two cubby compartments in the lower section. This interior configuration offers a balanced combination of open and enclosed storage suitable for books, decorative objects, or tableware. The doors continue the chevron motif on their interior surfaces, reinforcing the piece’s symmetry and meticulous detailing.

The cabinet is in excellent condition, exhibiting a warm, even patina on the mahogany with only minor wear consistent with age. It retains its original key and a fully functional lock mechanism.

Eyvind Beckman (1903–1983) was recognized for his refined proportions and his ability to harmonize functionality with decorative restraint. His work bridges modernist ideals and traditional Swedish craftsmanship, making his pieces sought after by collectors and institutions.

Hjalmar Jackson was a noted Swedish cabinetmaker specializing in limited-production and bespoke furniture during the early 20th century. The firm was known for collaborating with leading designers to produce high-quality works emphasizing veneering, marquetry, and exceptional joinery.

The cabinet measures 112 cm in width, 42.5 cm in depth, and 174 cm in height (approximately 44.09 x 16.73 x 68.50 inches).
