Axel Larsson bureau
This rare bureau, designed by Axel Larsson and produced by Svenska Möbelfabrikerna Bodafors in Sweden during the 1940s, exemplifies a refined, gently modernized classicism that Larsson championed in the transitional phase between Swedish Grace and early Scandinavian modernism. The piece is constructed from a combination of solid elm and elm veneer, with lacquered drawer fronts in a deep teal tone and complemented by patinated brass handles, which enhance the overall design.
The bureau has a compact rectangular form with rounded vertical edges, softening its visual presence and emphasizing a fluid, tactile quality. The case rests on tapered legs that subtly echo neoclassical precedents. The drawer configuration consists of four drawers: two narrow upper drawers and two full-width lower drawers, each fitted with solid brass handles. The contrast between the blue-green lacquer and the golden-red hue of the elm creates a visually distinctive and well-balanced composition.
Internally, the top drawers feature segmented compartments, including a circular lidded insert for smaller valuables, reflecting the piece’s intended use in refined domestic settings such as a bedroom or dressing area. Dovetail joints and other visible craftsmanship details exemplify the high-quality cabinetmaking tradition of Bodafors, one of Sweden’s most respected furniture manufacturers of the 20th century.
Axel Larsson was a prolific designer and architect whose career spanned several decades. He was deeply involved in both public and private commissions, contributing to functionalist and decorative interiors. His work at Bodafors combined rational construction methods with artistic design, helping establish a Swedish variant of modernism that retained warmth and elegance.
This bureau is a prime example of that design narrative—modern in its color blocking and functional interior, yet grounded in the solidity and detail of pre-war craftsmanship. A matching pair of bedside tables accompanies this piece, maintaining the same material palette and design language for a cohesive ensemble.
The bureau remains in very good vintage condition, with light wear consistent with age, including some natural patina and minor marks. Both the wood and lacquered surfaces have been well-preserved.
The dimensions of the bureau are 100 cm in width, 46 cm in depth, and 70 cm in height (approximately 39.4 x 18.1 x 27.6 inches).
