Axel Larsson

Axel Larsson (1898–1975) was a Swedish interior architect and furniture designer active during the development of Swedish modernism in the early and mid-20th century. He is particularly known for his work in public interiors and for furniture designed with a strong emphasis on functionality, durability, and clarity of form. His designs often combined modernist principles with a restrained elegance suited to institutional and commercial environments.

Biography

Larsson studied at the School of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm (Konstfack), where he trained as an interior architect. He established his own practice in Stockholm during the 1920s and became active at a time when functionalism was gaining influence in Sweden, particularly in the years surrounding the Stockholm Exhibition of 1930.

Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Larsson produced furniture primarily intended for public and professional settings such as offices, waiting rooms, and conference spaces. His work is characterized by balanced proportions, practical construction, and the use of durable materials including elm, beech, and oak. Rather than focusing on experimental forms, he developed furniture that was robust, well-crafted, and suitable for long-term use.

One of Larsson’s most well-documented commissions was the furnishing of the Park Avenue Hotel in Gothenburg in the 1930s, where he designed a series of seating and tables specifically adapted to the needs of a modern hotel environment. Many of these models remained in production for extended periods, reflecting their functional success and adaptability.

Axel Larsson’s work represents a pragmatic strand of Swedish modernism, where the focus lies on usability, structural clarity, and reliable craftsmanship. His furniture continues to be valued for its understated design and its close relationship to the functional ideals that shaped Scandinavian design in the 20th century.
