Anna-Johanna Ångström carpet
This rare flatweave carpet was designed by Anna-Johanna Ångström and produced in Sweden during the 1950s. It is executed in handwoven wool and signed with the initial “Å” which is characteristic of Ångström’s documented works. The piece reflects mid-century Scandinavian textile design through its harmonious color scheme, geometric repetition, and strong yet understated visual rhythm.
The carpet features a linear and symmetrical field composition dominated by warm ochre and beige tones, arranged in alternating vertical stripes interspersed with stylized geometric motifs. These motifs—resembling abstracted floral or star-like forms—are rendered in complementary colors including soft orange, moss green, and muted gray-blue, creating a subtle contrast that reinforces the rhythm of the pattern. A broad border frames the central field and is echoed by identical motifs and stripe sequences, enhancing the carpet’s architectural presence.
The material is tightly woven wool with a firm yet supple handle, consistent with traditional Swedish flatweave techniques. The ends are finished with hand-plaited and knotted fringes that emphasize the artisanal character of the piece. The palette is refined and earthy, designed to complement the muted interior tones typical of Scandinavian domestic architecture in the mid-century period.
Anna-Johanna Ångström was a Swedish textile artist and designer active in the mid-20th century. Though not as widely known as some of her contemporaries, she contributed to the legacy of Swedish flatweave rug design, a tradition notable for its integration of modernist abstraction with folk textile techniques. Works by Ångström are recognized for their compositional balance, soft geometry, and integration of regional textile heritage into contemporary forms.
The carpet is in good vintage condition with visible signs of usage and patina throughout the field and borders, including minor irregularities in the weave and some wear to the pile, consistent with its age and use.
The dimensions are 230 cm in width and 165 cm in depth, equivalent to approximately 90.6 inches by 65 inches.
