Information

This is a rare model 56 easy chair designed by Grete Jalk and produced by P. Jeppesens Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1960s. The chair exemplifies the hallmarks of Danish mid-century modern design through its graceful form, structural clarity, and use of high-quality materials.

The frame is crafted from solid rosewood, displaying rich, natural figuring and a warm, reddish-brown hue with expressive grain patterns. The structure is defined by finely rounded edges, slender tapering legs, and a sculptural armrest that flows organically into the vertical back posts. The rear frame supports a gently reclined backrest, constructed with a slatted configuration that is both visually light and structurally supportive. The cushions have been reupholstered in a blue woven fabric with a subtle texture, offering a clean and modern contrast to the warmth of the rosewood frame.

Grete Jalk (1920–2006) was one of Denmark’s leading female furniture designers and a student of Kaare Klint. She became known for her elegant and thoughtful designs that prioritized both aesthetics and comfort. Jalk’s work is recognized for its sculptural yet practical forms and her ability to subtly innovate within the principles of Danish modernism. Her collaboration with P. Jeppesens Møbelfabrik yielded several of her most refined and collectible furniture designs, including this model 56.

Produced in the 1960s, this chair reflects the design ethos of the Scandinavian modern movement—functional, minimalist, and human-centered—while its material richness and organic detailing elevate it beyond mere utility. The chair maintains excellent proportions for lounge seating, with an emphasis on both comfort and elegance.

The dimensions of the chair are 72 cm wide, 75 cm deep, and 77 cm high, with a seat height of 40 cm (28.3 x 29.5 x 30.3 inches, seat height 15.7 inches). It is a standalone collector’s piece and may also be paired with a matching sofa from the same model series, extending its use in coordinated interior settings. The chair remains in excellent restored condition, with the wooden frame showing minimal wear and the new upholstery complementing the original form.
