Carl Malmsten table
This rare table was designed by the Swedish architect and designer Carl Malmsten and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden during the 1920s. Malmsten, one of Sweden’s most influential furniture designers of the early 20th century, was known for combining traditional craftsmanship with functional modern design, often highlighting Swedish materials and refined proportions. This piece carries his branded signature along with the original NK metal tag, marking its authenticity and provenance.
The table features a circular top executed in chequered flamed birch veneer, a technique that creates a rich and varied surface pattern emphasizing the natural depth and movement of the wood grain. The contrast between the warm golden tone of the flamed birch veneer and the dark stained birch base adds visual balance and sophistication. The top rests on a central pedestal, turned in an elegant baluster form, which transitions into a tripod base with gently curved legs. This pedestal construction not only provides stability but also gives the piece a sense of lightness and refinement.
Its design reflects Malmsten’s commitment to timeless quality, rooted in classical Swedish tradition yet resonating with the restrained elegance of the Nordic decorative arts of the 1920s. The craftsmanship of Nordiska Kompaniet, one of Sweden’s leading furniture producers of the era, further underlines the high standard of execution and materials used in this table.
The table remains in good vintage condition with small signs of usage consistent with age, retaining its patina and authenticity. It represents an early and collectible example of Malmsten’s work, suitable for both private collectors and museum contexts.
