Nanna Ditzel desk
This very rare freestanding desk was designed by Nanna Ditzel and produced by Poul Kolds Savværk in Denmark in 1955. The piece is constructed in oak, showing Ditzel’s characteristic attention to proportion, craftsmanship, and natural material expression that defined much of Danish mid-century design. The surface presents a warm golden tone, with a fine grain pattern running consistently through the top and drawer fronts. The oak has developed a soft sheen and even patina over time, emphasizing the organic qualities of the wood.
The desk has a light and architectural presence, defined by its tapering, faceted legs and balanced rectangular top. Each side contains two drawers, suspended directly beneath the tabletop and constructed with precision dovetail joints and sculpted wooden pulls. The drawers glide smoothly and are flush with the frame, maintaining a clean linear profile. The underside of the desk features a subtle curved apron that softens the geometry of the piece, contributing to its visual refinement. The freestanding structure allows it to be placed centrally within a room, highlighting its elegant symmetry and minimalist design.
Nanna Ditzel (1923–2005) was one of Denmark’s most innovative designers of the postwar period. Trained as both a cabinetmaker and furniture designer, she was known for her ability to merge sculptural form with functional clarity. Her work with Poul Kolds Savværk during the 1950s reflects a period of experimentation and material honesty, aligning with the broader Scandinavian modern movement that emphasized craftsmanship and human-centered design.
The desk remains in excellent vintage condition with small signs of use and a fine restored surface. The restoration respects the original finish and texture, preserving the integrity of the oak while bringing back its natural luster.
