Ole Wanscher Colonial chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs, model Colonial, was designed by Ole Wanscher and produced by P. Jeppesen Møbelfabrik in Denmark in 1959. The frames are crafted in solid rosewood with woven cane seat supports and newly upholstered cushions in red-orange velvet, reflecting a fine balance between classic elegance and modern functionality.
The Colonial chair is one of Ole Wanscher’s most recognized designs, celebrated for its refined proportions and light, architectural construction. The frame features slender, turned legs and gently curved armrests that create an impression of delicacy while maintaining remarkable strength. The woven cane under-seat structure provides flexibility and comfort, and the removable cushions introduce a sense of softness that contrasts beautifully with the linear precision of the frame. The warm hue of the velvet upholstery complements the deep tone of the rosewood, enhancing the sculptural qualities of the design.
Wanscher’s design philosophy was rooted in timeless craftsmanship and classical restraint, often drawing inspiration from 18th-century English and colonial furniture while interpreting it through modern Scandinavian sensibilities. His work with P. Jeppesen Møbelfabrik represents the pinnacle of Danish mid-century cabinetmaking, where craftsmanship and material integrity are equally emphasized.
The chairs remain in good vintage condition with minor signs of age and use. The rosewood has developed an elegant patina, and the newly upholstered cushions add renewed vibrancy while respecting the original aesthetic.
