Ole Wanscher rocking chair
This rare rocking chair model “Senator” was designed by Danish architect and furniture designer Ole Wanscher in the 1950s and produced by the renowned Danish manufacturer France & Daverkosen. The frame is constructed in solid teak, showcasing the rich grain patterns characteristic of the wood, with a warm reddish-brown tone that complements the original red-brown leather upholstery. The design integrates fluid, sculptural armrests with an elegantly curved sled base, providing a balanced and harmonious rocking motion. The cushions feature deep button tufting, adding visual texture and enhancing comfort.
Ole Wanscher, a leading figure of the Danish modern movement, was known for his refined craftsmanship, classical proportions, and functional elegance. He studied under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and later became a professor there, influencing generations of designers. Wanscher’s furniture often bridged traditional craftsmanship and modernist principles, resulting in pieces that remain timeless and highly collectible. The “Senator” series was among his most celebrated designs, embodying understated luxury and precise joinery.
France & Daverkosen, active from the late 1940s until its transition to France & Søn in the late 1950s, played a key role in introducing Danish modern furniture to international markets. Their close collaborations with designers like Wanscher, Grete Jalk, and Arne Vodder resulted in some of the era’s most enduring furniture classics. The firm’s production quality, with meticulous wood selection and superior upholstery work, contributed to the lasting value of their pieces.
The chair is in good vintage condition, with visible patina and signs of use consistent with age. The leather retains a rich, even tone but shows natural wear, creasing, and surface marks from decades of use. The teak frame is structurally sound, with a well-preserved finish that highlights the wood’s depth and warmth. The overall form remains true to its original proportions, preserving the designer’s intent.
