Yngve Ekström sofa
This rare sofa, model Kontrapunkt, was designed by Yngve Ekström and produced by Swedese Möbler AB in Sweden in 1968. The piece exemplifies Ekström’s distinctive approach to Scandinavian modernism, combining architectural clarity with organic material warmth. Constructed from solid pine, the frame is defined by clean geometric lines, exposed joinery, and visible craftsmanship that highlight both structure and function.
The sofa’s frame is crafted from pine with a warm golden tone and a fine grain pattern that complements its linear proportions. The design includes subtly shaped armrests, exposed wooden fasteners, and original metal castors that provide mobility without compromising its sculptural presence. The cushions are upholstered in the original deep teal fabric, characterized by a fine ribbed texture and button detailing that enhances the tactile quality of the seating. The upholstery contrasts elegantly with the pale hue of the pine, resulting in a balanced, modern aesthetic.
Yngve Ekström (1913–1988), co-founder of Swedese Möbler, was one of Sweden’s leading figures in postwar design. His work—like the celebrated Lamino chair—reflects a consistent interest in ergonomic comfort, honest materials, and technical innovation. The Kontrapunkt series, introduced in the late 1960s, represents Ekström’s move toward more architectural compositions, expressing both visual rhythm and structural integrity.
This example remains in excellent vintage condition with minimal signs of use. The pine frame has developed a light patina consistent with age, while the original fabric retains its color and texture. The piece stands as a rare and well-preserved example of Swedish mid-century design, illustrating the fusion of craftsmanship, utility, and modern aesthetics.
