Information

This is a very rare armchair, model Elizabeth, designed by Ib Kofod-Larsen in 1956 and produced by Christensen & Larsen in Denmark. The piece is crafted in rosewood with the original black leather upholstery, exemplifying the refined sculptural quality of Danish mid-century design. The armchair displays a balance of elegance and comfort, combining organic lines with strong material contrasts.

The frame is constructed from rosewood, displaying a rich, deep grain and warm natural tone. The armrests flow seamlessly into the back legs, creating a fluid and sculptural silhouette. The seat and backrest are upholstered in original black leather, which shows a soft sheen and gentle signs of age. The leather has developed a subtle patina, consistent with its vintage condition, while remaining supple and intact. The overall craftsmanship reflects the high standards of Christensen & Larsen, a producer known for its collaborations with leading Danish designers of the period.

Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921–2003) was one of Denmark’s most prominent architects and designers, celebrated for his ability to combine modernist clarity with comfort and warmth. The Elizabeth chair, one of his most renowned designs, was first introduced in 1956 and gained international recognition when purchased by Queen Elizabeth II during an official visit to Copenhagen, from which it derives its name. The chair represents Kofod-Larsen’s dedication to ergonomic design and his skill in creating furniture that appears light yet retains strength and durability.

This armchair stands as a fine example of mid-century Scandinavian furniture, where form and function are harmoniously united. It reflects both the Danish tradition of masterful woodworking and the international appeal of modernist design during the 1950s.

The piece remains in excellent vintage condition, with only minor signs of usage and age-related patina that enhance its authenticity.
