Information

This very rare bar cabinet, attributed to Norwegian designer Torbjørn Afdal, was produced in Norway during the 1960s. The piece represents Scandinavian mid-century design at its most sculptural and refined, combining functional elegance with meticulous craftsmanship and a rich material palette.

The cabinet is constructed from richly grained rosewood, displaying a deep reddish-brown color with linear figure patterns and darker accents that contribute to a dynamic visual rhythm. Its form is distinguished by a gently arched top and rounded sides, creating a soft, architectural silhouette that is uncommon in bar furniture of this period. The vertically veneered doors follow the curvature of the body and are fitted with carved solid rosewood handles, shaped in a tapered sculptural form that harmonizes with the convex lines of the cabinet.

Inside, the cabinet reveals two glass display shelves set within a domed compartment that echoes the barrel-vaulted shape of the exterior. The interior is lined with matching rosewood veneer, maintaining visual continuity and providing a warm, inviting setting suitable for glassware or collectibles. Brass hinges and fittings introduce a subtle metallic contrast, reinforcing the luxurious character of the design.

Beneath the arched display section, a full-width drawer is integrated into the lower apron of the cabinet. This drawer is constructed with dovetail joints and features a discreet horizontal lip pull, preserving the facade’s clean lines while offering practical functionality. The entire piece is supported by a finely crafted leg frame composed of round, tapered legs connected by rounded stretchers. This structural solution lends stability and elegance to the tall, slender form.

Torbjørn Afdal (1917–1999) was a prominent Norwegian designer affiliated with the firm Bruksbo. His work is marked by precise geometry, understated detailing, and exceptional wood craftsmanship, often blending traditional Norwegian influences with modernist design principles. Although exact documentation of this particular cabinet is limited, its stylistic and construction qualities align closely with Afdal’s recognized oeuvre.

The cabinet measures 75.5 cm in width, 39 cm in depth, and 153 cm in height (approximately 29.7 x 15.4 x 60.2 inches). It is in excellent condition, with rosewood surfaces preserved in a rich, consistent finish and the interior components fully intact.
