Hans Wegner RY-25 sideboard
This rare and distinguished model RY-25 sideboard, also known as the “President” was designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1959 and produced by Ry Møbler in Denmark. The piece is constructed from highly figured rosewood, with chromed cylindrical legs that terminate in discreet rosewood-capped feet. The exterior features the characteristic deep, rich tones of rosewood, with vertical grain orientation across the four sliding doors, subtly reinforcing the linearity of the design. The understated chrome hardware at the center doors adds a restrained modernist accent.
The form of the sideboard is defined by its horizontal, rectilinear proportions with minimal decorative flourishes, adhering to Wegner’s enduring principles of functional elegance and material integrity. The front facade is uninterrupted by handles, as the doors open via a recessed pull mechanism integrated into the stainless steel center plates. The legs elevate the sideboard off the ground, enhancing its visual lightness and contrasting with the dense visual weight of the casework.
The interior is crafted from solid and veneered oak, offering a warm contrast to the darker rosewood exterior. The interior features adjustable shelves on the right side and a bank of finely dovetailed drawers on the left, designed for functional versatility in both residential and executive settings. The precision of the joinery, the careful grain alignment, and the material juxtaposition demonstrate the high level of craftsmanship associated with Ry Møbler and Wegner’s broader body of work.
Hans J. Wegner, one of the leading figures in Danish modern design, is celebrated for his mastery of form and material, particularly in seating and cabinetry. This model exemplifies his ability to merge sculptural clarity with usability. Ry Møbler, an esteemed Danish furniture manufacturer, was known for its close collaborations with Wegner, producing some of his most iconic and collectible pieces during the mid-20th century.
This sideboard is in good vintage condition and has been professionally restored. The surface has been carefully refinished to preserve the depth and complexity of the rosewood, while ensuring a clean and stable structure.
The dimensions are 200 cm in width, 49 cm in depth, and 79.5 cm in height (approximately 78.7 x 19.3 x 31.3 inches). This model represents a key example of Scandinavian modernism, balancing luxurious material expression with architectural restraint and enduring utility.
