Information

This rare set of six dining chairs, model 301 — also known as “Universe” — was designed by Danish designer Kai Kristiansen and produced by Magnus Olesen in Denmark in 1965. It is a prime example of Scandinavian mid-century design, combining refined craftsmanship with functional elegance and timeless material quality.

The chairs are constructed from richly grained rosewood, a material highly prized in mid-century Danish furniture for its depth of color and expressive patterning. The sculptural frames are characterized by clean lines and subtle curves, with gently tapered legs and a distinctively shaped backrest composed of two horizontal rails. This open, airy design contributes both to the visual lightness and ergonomic comfort of the chairs. The seats retain their original leather upholstery in a natural tone, which has aged beautifully, developing a soft patina and slight wear that speaks to the set’s authenticity and history.

Kai Kristiansen (b. 1929) is considered one of the most important figures of Danish modern furniture design. Known for his meticulous attention to detail and innovative approach to form and function, Kristiansen’s work reflects the post-war era’s focus on craftsmanship, material honesty, and human-centered design. His collaborations with Magnus Olesen resulted in some of the most iconic dining and seating pieces of the 20th century. Magnus Olesen, founded in 1937, was a leading producer of modern Danish furniture, celebrated for its precision joinery, durable construction, and close collaborations with the country’s leading designers.

This particular model reflects the balance of form and function that defines Kristiansen’s work — an elegant piece of furniture that is both sculptural and practical. Its minimalist silhouette, combined with the warmth of rosewood and the natural character of aged leather, makes it a quintessential representation of Scandinavian mid-century design.

The chairs are in good vintage condition with minor signs of use and an attractive patina consistent with age.

Dimensions are 52.5 cm wide, 48 cm deep, and 73.5 cm high, with a seat height of 45 cm (20.7 x 18.9 x 28.9 in, SH 17.7 in)
