Information

This sculptural wine rack was designed by Swedish designer Torsten Johansson and produced by AB Formträ in Sweden during the 1950s. Johansson was known for his innovative approach to wood bending and his exploration of organic, functional forms that reflect the ideals of Scandinavian modernism — combining utility, craftsmanship, and elegance.

The piece is constructed from rosewood and beech, two materials characteristic of Scandinavian furniture design from the mid-century period. The dark, richly grained rosewood contrasts beautifully with the lighter beech dowels, creating a visually striking interplay of tones and textures. Its modular, wave-like structure is achieved through advanced moulded wood techniques, allowing for both strength and lightness while maintaining a refined sculptural quality.

The wine rack’s design is both functional and architectural. It holds multiple bottles securely within its undulating compartments while acting as a decorative object in its own right. The clean lines and rhythmic form embody the Scandinavian modernist ethos of form following function, with a distinct focus on material honesty and craftsmanship.

The piece is in good vintage condition with minor signs of age and use, consistent with its era.

Dimensions are 31.5 cm wide, 18 cm deep, and 38 cm high (12.4 x 7.1 x 15 in)
