Finn Juhl easy chairs

This rare pair of easy chairs, model BO59, also known as the “Fireplace Chair” was designed by Finn Juhl and produced by Bovirke in Denmark in 1946. The design exemplifies Juhl’s sculptural and organic approach to modern furniture, merging precise craftsmanship with an almost architectural sense of proportion and lightness.

Constructed in solid teak, the frames display the fluid, hand-shaped contours that characterize Juhl’s early work. The armrests are elegantly curved and tapering, transitioning seamlessly into the rear legs. The frame’s structure is visually light yet highly stable, featuring cross braces that enhance rigidity while preserving an open, airy aesthetic.

The chairs are newly upholstered in a combination of grey and yellow fabric, a pairing that accentuates the dynamic geometry of the design. The textured neutral backrest contrasts with the vibrant mustard-yellow seat cushion, highlighting Juhl’s sensitivity to material and color. The cushions are button-tufted, providing both visual depth and comfort.

This model reflects Finn Juhl’s exploration of organic form and the human body’s relationship to furniture, principles that positioned him as one of the leading figures of Danish modernism. The craftsmanship, executed by Bovirke, demonstrates the artisanal precision typical of Danish furniture production in the postwar period.

Both chairs remain in excellent restored condition, with minor signs of age consistent with careful preservation. They represent an important example of early Danish modern design where form, structure, and material achieve perfect harmony.
