Erik Chambert dining chairs
This rare large set of eighteen dining chairs was designed by Erik Chambert and produced by Chamberts Møbelfabriker in Norrköping, Sweden, during the 1930s. The design is a striking example of Scandinavian Art Deco, merging classical symmetry with fine Swedish craftsmanship and a restrained sense of luxury. Chambert, known for his refined and architectural furniture, here demonstrates a perfect balance between structural clarity and decorative detail.
The frames are made of flamed birch, with dark-stained carved birch legs that lend a vertical rhythm to the design. The legs are fluted and terminate in block feet, reflecting neoclassical influence filtered through a distinctly modern Scandinavian lens. The backrests consist of three horizontal rails with stylized carved motifs—each hand-detailed, lending subtle individuality within the uniformity of the set.
The seats have been newly upholstered in a natural linen fabric, adding a contemporary texture that complements the warmth and contrast of the dark-stained birch. The pale tone of the linen enhances the sculptural lines of the chairs while preserving their historical integrity.
Each chair showcases the artisanal skill of Swedish furniture-making between the wars—precise joinery, solid construction, and fine surface finishing. The set is in good vintage condition with visible signs of use and a rich patina consistent with age, adding depth to the original finish.
These chairs embody the transitional elegance of Scandinavian Art Deco, blending geometric refinement with craftsmanship rooted in tradition.
