Erik Chambert (1902–1988) was a Swedish furniture designer and cabinetmaker associated with the tradition of high-quality Swedish craftsmanship during the mid-20th century. He is closely linked to the family firm Chamberts Möbelfabrik in Norrköping, where he developed furniture characterized by precise joinery, refined proportions, and careful material selection. Chambert’s work reflects a balance between traditional cabinetmaking and the emerging ideals of Swedish modern design.

Biography

Erik Chambert trained as a cabinetmaker and later studied at the Technical School in Stockholm. In the 1930s he joined the family business Chamberts Möbelfabrik, founded in 1885, which became known for producing finely crafted furniture for both private clients and public interiors. Under his direction, the company gained recognition for its technical quality and disciplined design language.

Chambert collaborated with several prominent architects and designers, including Carl Malmsten, producing furniture and interior fittings that emphasized durability and craftsmanship. His own designs often feature restrained ornamentation, carefully proportioned forms, and the use of high-grade woods such as mahogany, walnut, and birch.

Throughout the mid-20th century, Erik Chambert’s furniture was supplied to institutional and diplomatic settings as well as private homes, contributing to the reputation of Swedish cabinetmaking on an international level. Today his work is regarded as representative of the Swedish tradition of well-crafted modern furniture, valued for its structural clarity, material integrity, and long-term durability.
