Mauri Almari table lamp
This rare table lamp, model K11-15, was designed by Finnish designer Mauri Almari and produced by Idman in Finland during the 1950s. The lamp exemplifies mid-century Scandinavian lighting design, combining functionality with refined material details. It features a conical shade in black lacquered metal with perforated slits along the edge, designed both for ventilation and to create a subtle play of light when illuminated.
The lamp is constructed with a slender brass stem, which shows a natural patina that emphasizes its age and authenticity. Its circular base is wrapped in hand-stitched leather, adding a tactile quality and a warm contrast to the cool metal surfaces. The shade is adjustable, allowing for directional light, making it practical for use as a desk or reading lamp while maintaining its sculptural presence.
Mauri Almari was known for his modernist approach to lighting, and his work with Idman contributed significantly to shaping Finnish mid-century design. Idman was one of the leading lighting manufacturers in Finland during the postwar years, recognized for producing high-quality lamps that combined technical innovation with contemporary aesthetics.
The lamp remains in good vintage condition with visible signs of usage and patina, particularly on the brass, which is consistent with age and enhances the character of the piece. The lacquered surface of the shade shows minor wear but retains its deep, matte finish, complementing the lamp’s overall elegant expression.
