Information

This rare pair of model CH25 easy chairs, designed by Hans J. Wegner and produced by Carl Hansen & Søn in Denmark during the 1950s, exemplifies the core principles of Danish modernism. The design combines honest materials, elegant craftsmanship, and ergonomic form, making the chairs not only functional but visually captivating as well.

The frames are crafted from solid oak with a warm, natural finish that beautifully highlights the grain structure of the wood. The shape is low and wide, with gently reclining proportions and softly rounded edges, ensuring comfort and a relaxed posture. The back legs are dramatically angled and extend rearward, contributing to the chair’s dynamic visual appeal while supporting the relaxed seating position. The front legs and stretchers are slightly tapered and faceted, offering both structural integrity and aesthetic balance.

The seats and backrests are hand-woven using natural hemp cord in a tight, durable weave pattern. The weaving technique for the CH25 is labor-intensive, requiring over 400 meters of paper or hemp cord per chair. This intricate weaving provides both comfort and ventilation, while the suspension allows for slight movement under pressure, adding to the overall seating experience.

The pair remains in very good vintage condition, with even aging of the wood and cord. The oak surfaces have developed a warm patina, showing minor wear and small marks consistent with use and age. The weaving is intact, with no fraying or breakage, and the chairs are marked with the original Carl Hansen & Søn production label, confirming their authenticity.

Hans J. Wegner (1914–2007), one of the most influential designers of the 20th century, was known for his exceptional mastery of wood and his commitment to functional refinement. The CH25, introduced in 1950, was one of his earliest designs for Carl Hansen & Søn and has remained in continuous production. The chair’s combination of solid wood frame and handwoven seat reinterprets traditional craftsmanship with a modern design language, reflecting Wegner’s belief in creating accessible, honest, and timeless pieces.

Carl Hansen & Søn, based in Odense, has been a leading producer of Danish furniture since 1908, collaborating with Wegner from the late 1940s. The company’s commitment to quality and craftsmanship is evident in each of its pieces.

Each chair measures 70 cm in width, 75 cm in depth, and 72 cm in height, with a seat height of 37 cm (approximately 27.6 x 29.5 x 28.3 inches, SH: 14.6 inches).
