Information

This early example of the model 116 easy chair, also known as the “Senator” was designed by Ole Wanscher and produced by France & Søn in Denmark. Introduced in 1951, this version is crafted from solid teak and upholstered in its original black leather, a combination that highlights the chair’s refined modernist character with an emphasis on comfort and material honesty.

The teak frame displays gently sculpted transitions with flowing armrests and softly tapering legs. The craftsmanship is meticulous, featuring exposed joinery and smoothly resolved curves throughout the seat structure. The wood has a rich golden-brown tone with a subtle sheen, revealing the fine grain and natural variations typical of vintage teak from this era. The backrest is supported by a curved cross rail that echoes the chair’s soft geometry while providing structural strength and a visual rhythm.

The original black leather cushions are button-tufted and fitted on both the seat and back. The leather shows light patina with minor creasing and wear, consistent with careful use over time. The upholstery retains its form and offers both visual presence and ergonomic support.

Ole Wanscher (1903–1985), a pivotal figure in Danish modernism and student of Kaare Klint, was known for blending classical influences with contemporary design ideals. His architectural approach emphasized proportion, construction, and material elegance. France & Søn was among Denmark’s leading mid-century furniture producers, recognized for technical precision and quality craftsmanship in both serial and bespoke pieces.

The chair is in very good vintage condition, with well-preserved woodwork and original leather showing age-appropriate wear.

Dimensions are 68 cm wide, 75 cm deep, and 79 cm high (approximately 26.8 by 29.5 by 31.1 inches), with a seat height of 43 cm (16.9 inches). This piece exemplifies Danish modern design of the early 1950s, balancing sculptural clarity, functional refinement, and durable material quality.
