Information

The bureau or side table model 501 was designed by Kai Kristiansen and produced by Aksel Kjersgaard in Odder, Denmark, during the 1950s. Constructed from solid rosewood and rosewood veneer, the piece showcases the characteristic dark brown and reddish-brown tones of the wood, with prominent linear grain patterns that emphasize its natural texture. The form is rectilinear and well-balanced, comprising a cuboid case supported by four square-section legs. It features two drawers, both crafted with dovetail joinery and fitted with circular dark wooden knobs that maintain a subtle and functional aesthetic.

Kai Kristiansen, born in 1929, is a notable Danish furniture designer associated with the functional and aesthetic ideals of mid-century Scandinavian modernism. A student of Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Kristiansen is recognized for his refined joinery, modular designs, and use of exotic woods such as teak and rosewood. Aksel Kjersgaard, the producer, was a Danish cabinetmaker and furniture manufacturer based in Odder, active from the 1950s onward, renowned for high-quality craftsmanship and collaborations with designers like Kristiansen.

This model embodies the era’s focus on clean lines, visible craftsmanship, and practical proportions. Its minimalist design is typical of Scandinavian modernism, while the rich rosewood material adds warmth and visual depth. The piece is in very good condition, showing light surface wear consistent with age and use, and retaining a well-preserved patina.

The dimensions are 60 centimeters wide, 39 centimeters deep, and 55 centimeters high (approximately 23.6 by 15.4 by 21.7 inches).
