Erik Tidstrand table lamp
This is a rare table lamp, model 29595, designed by Erik Tidstrand and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) in Sweden during the 1930s. The lamp exemplifies Swedish functionalist design from the interwar period, with a combination of elegant detailing and purposeful construction.
The shade is a shallow, dome-shaped form in a matte green lacquered finish, bordered with a thin brass edge. At its apex, a sculpted, fluted brass finial in the shape of a stylized flower anchors the shade to the frame, adding a decorative accent characteristic of early Swedish Grace and Art Deco influences. The underside of the shade is finished in white lacquer to reflect light evenly downward.
The central column is crafted in vertically fluted walnut providing a vertical rhythm and warmth that contrasts with the cooler-toned metal elements. The base is a simple brass disc with a lightly domed profile, housing a white plastic push switch.
The lamp houses two bulbs arranged in a radial configuration beneath the shade, supported by a curved brass armature.
Erik Tidstrand (1892–1963) was an industrial designer and architect associated with Nordiska Kompaniet, one of Sweden’s leading department stores and design firms, known for pioneering modern interior design in Scandinavia. His work during the 1920s and 1930s helped shape the Swedish aesthetic transition from classical-inspired ornament to modern functionalism. Tidstrand’s designs are noted for their clarity, proportion, and attention to material harmony.
The lamp measures 46 cm in height and 37 cm in diameter, equivalent to approximately 18.1 inches tall and 14.6 inches in diameter. It is preserved in excellent condition with original finishes intact. The brass elements show minor aged patina, the wooden shaft is clean and undamaged, and the painted shade is free from dents or corrosion.
